Sam, a 23-year-old participant with limited family connections and ongoing court matters was referred to the Reconnect program while relying on Centrelink benefits and struggling with substance use. Working with his case manager, he identified strengths and interests in the equine industry.
Taking initiative, Sam secured a trial position with a respected racehorse trainer by cold-calling employers. The Reconnect program provided critical support, including temporary accommodation to overcome transport barriers and essential workwear for his new role.
Within two and a half months, he transformed his circumstances, securing permanent employment with onsite accommodation. Motivated by this opportunity, he reduced substance use and resolved outstanding legal matters, demonstrating the power of focused support at critical moments.
